5 Common Types of Lawn Tractor Tires

If it's time to replace your lawn tractor tires, you have several types of tires to choose from. The following are the 5 most common tire types.

1. Rib Tread Tire

Rib tread tires are mainly used on the front of lawn tractors to reduce damage to the turf when turning. The tread pattern is very low profile so it won't grab at the turf. These tires are also often used on small carts and hand trucks since they roll quite smoothly.

2. Round Shoulder Turf Tire

These are also used mainly as front tractor tires. They have a low tread depth to help minimize damage to the turf or other surfaces when turning, but they offer more traction than the rib tread for surfaces where it is necessary.

3. Square Shoulder Turf Tire

These tires are typically found on the rear of lawn tractors. They have a larger footprint and a biting edge for traction and cornering performance. Because the footprint is larger, they are better suited for use on wet or soft ground as they won't sink in.

4. Commercial Grade Turf Tire

These tires are similar to the square shoulder tires, but use heavier ply ratings and deeper tread depth for commercial applications. They're typically used on things like heavy-duty lawn mower or golf course equipment.

5. Lug Tread Tire

These tires are used when traction is necessary, such as when plowing snow, on loose soils or traveling up hills. They are used on the rear axle only, but even then can cause tearing or damage to turf because of the aggressive tread pattern.

Which of these tire types is best for your tractor will depend on how you use it. If it's mainly used on solid surfaces and not for pulling other equipment, you'll choose a different tire than if it's used on wet, soft surfaces or for towing other equipment or trailers.

Make sure you choose the tire type that is going to suit your needs, otherwise you won't get the best performance from your tractor.
